Sound of Hockey Episode 13 – WE GOT A FRANCHISE! Cameo by Nick Cotsonika of NHL.com
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!
Seattle has officially been awarded the 32nd NHL franchise, and John Barr, Andy Eide, and Darren Brown are here to tell you all about it!
In Episode 13, Darren starts the show off with a VERY unique tribute to his co-host, John, for all of the incredible work that John put in to make the NHL coming to Seattle a reality. Then the guys recap the events of December 4th and just how special they were, from the announcement itself, to the reaction of the community, to our politicians trash-talking Vancouver.
During NHL Seattle’s party that day, Andy and Darren managed to get some live fan reactions from a few friends of the NHLtoSeattle cause, so those clips are in the show, and Nick Cotsonika of NHL.com even drops by to give his two cents on the matter (spoiler, Nick doesn’t think Seattle will win the Cup in its first season).
John also gives his review of seeing The Mighty Ducks for the first time ever. Then the guys dive into current NHL news, such as the hiring of Chuck Fletcher to be the GM of the Flyers, William Nylander finally signing with the Maple Leafs (thank God that’s over), and the big trade between the Blackhawks and Coyotes.
Plus, tons of general hockey talk in Weekly One-Timers, Get Off My Lawn, and Games on the Radar.

Sound of Hockey Episode 12 – When Hockey Bites
Episode 12 is here, and the guys have lots to talk about after two coach firings, two very full slates of NHL games on the days before and after Thanksgiving, and one Gritty wedding crash. Darren has been on vacation in New York during recording, but refuses to miss a week #ForThePod!
This week, the guys discuss the upcoming December 4th Board of Governors vote to determine whether or not Seattle will be granted an NHL hockey franchise, as well as what they expect to come out of that meeting. They also consider the various factors surrounding when the team will actually start, as lots of rumblings have been happening about a 2021 start as opposed to a 2020 start.
Looking around the NHL, Andy, John, and Darren break down the coaching changes in Edmonton and St. Louis, examine the Sabres’ awesome hot streak, and have their minds boggled at Patrik Laine’s scoring tear. Oh, and they make fun of Brian Burke for hating the Hurricanes’ “surge” celebration.
Plus, Weekly One-Timers, Buy/Sell/Hold, and Games on the Radar.

Sound of Hockey Episode 11 – View from the Press Box / Thankful for Hockey
Lots to talk about on the latest episode of Sound of Hockey. Earlier this week, Darren and John had the awesome experience of joining Andy in the press box at the Seattle Thunderbirds game, so they break down that outing, and Andy shares about his recent spot doing color commentary for a WHL TV broadcast.
Then after a bit of Seattle arena (and Vegas arena) talk, the guys head down a slightly different path by taking a look at the college hockey landscape, with focus on the awesome story associated with Arizona State’s relatively new program and its quick progress.
Plus, Weekly One-Timers, a couple impromptu “Get Off My Lawn” rants, and a new incentive to write us a five-star review!
Sound of Hockey Episode 10 – Come Sail Away with ESPN’s Emily Kaplan
The title of this week’s episode may spoil this, but… Sound of Hockey welcomes Emily Kaplan to Episode 10!
John, Andy, and Darren have a great chat with ESPN’s National Hockey Reporter and co-host of ESPN On Ice with Wyshynski and Kaplan about her experiences so far in her role.
Plus, plenty of hockey talk with Emily about such topics as the Joel Quenneville firing, Seattle’s hockey culture, and which host should be most excited about his team. Emily even helps the guys do this week’s Buy, Sell, or Hold.
Aside from the interview, there’s lots of Seattle discussion, a breakdown of the Senators talking s*** about their coaches, Weekly One-Timers, Get Off My Lawn, and much more!

Sound of Hockey Episode 9 – Movies and Goalies and Kings, Oh My!
On the latest episode of Sound of Hockey, John, Andy, and Darren start by sharing their heartfelt love for Brad Marchand, who recently pulled yet another interesting stunt to get himself in hot water.
On the Seattle front, John confesses that he’s never seen The Mighty Ducks, when sharing about the upcoming SIFF film festival event. This leads to some spoilers of classic hockey films, because Andy just can’t contain himself.
Next, the guys dive into the LA Kings’ firing of coach John Stevens and what it means for that franchise. After spending way too much time on the Kings, they then spend even more time on the Canucks, much to Darren’s dismay, but eventually appease him with Goalie Gear Corner.
In Weekly One-Timers, discussion topics include:
-Jonathan Quick getting injured again
-Slava Voynov applying for reinstatement (ew)
-Yanni Gourde and Pekka Rinne getting contract extensions
The show wraps with another rousing round of Buy, Sell, or Hold.
Sound of Hockey Episode 8 – Hockey Hugfest
This week, Andy, John, and Darren start with a nice discussion about John Tortorella’s latest rant, this one regarding the newfound softness of the NHL.
They then slide into some Seattle talk, specifically about the news that the NHL already has 2020 realignment on the radar to accommodate the new team, as well as that the NHL’s players are completely out of touch with what the team should be called (Crapweasels, obvi).
In that realm, they also discuss some WHL and WHL alumni news, before jumping into the revelation that the NHL is full steam ahead on making money off of hockey-related gambling.
Weekly One-Timers makes its triumphant return with topics like the Hurricanes’ latest zany celebration, before another great new segment – Buy, Sell, or Hold – is introduced.

Sound of Hockey Episode 7 – Our First Guest Is… DAVE TIPPETT!
HUMONGOUS EPISODE THIS WEEK!
The first ever guest on Sound of Hockey is Dave Tippett, former NHL player, head coach, Jack Adams Award winner, and current advisor for NHL Seattle. Trust us, you won’t want to miss this one whether you’re a Seattle-based hockey fan or not.
With Dave, the guys – John, Andy, and Darren – talk extensively about Tippett’s experience working on the Seattle project, but they also get into some pretty good hockey talk in general. Tippett shares some awesome stories from his time coaching the Dallas Stars and Arizona Coyotes, explains his metrics for evaluating players, and even tells us what the Dave Tippett blow-up looks like. Oh, and he explains the context of this beautiful video.
Also in this episode, a recap of Peter Laviolette’s press scrum in which he donned a life-like bull mask, a riveting update on where the trees around KeyArena are being moved to (oh yes, it’s riveting), a check-in on some of the former WHL players that have reached the NHL.
The guys also debate whether the Colorado Avalanche and Carolina Hurricanes are for real, unravel the irony of the Kenya Ice Lions story, and consider the impact of a possible merger between the CWHL and NWHL.
Plus Weekly One-Timers, Get Off My Lawn, and Games On the Radar.

Sound of Hockey Episode 6 – Let Us Have Our Day
In Episode 6, John is back from New York – where he watched his Sharks get smoked by the Islanders with 8,000 of his closest friends – so he once again joins Andy and Darren in BarrDown Studios.
Together, the guys revisit Seattle’s practice facility now that the news is official, and give a riveting update on the construction of KeyArena. Also in Seattle hockey news, they analyze the “heated” exchange between the Governor of Washington and the Premier of BC, and Andy gives an update on the WHL.
Next, the guys examine the increased scoring in the NHL and what may be contributing to the higher numbers, before they get downright buried in Weekly One-Timers. One-Timer topics include:
-Auston Matthews/Patrick Kane celebration trolling
-Hurricanes’ new stick salute
-Rick Nash retiring, but also totally not retiring
-Nashville’s excessive banners
-Red Wings changing the color of their seats to hide the emptiness
They wrap the show up with a GREAT “Get Off My Lawn” rant from John (about basketball).

Sound of Hockey Episode 5 – Guess Who Won a T-Shirt (and a Practice Facility)!
In the latest episode, John has selfishly taken a vacation to New York, but unselfishly has also taken time out of said vacation to participate in the podcast. So, Sound of Hockey has officially gone bi-coastal!
This week, John, Andy, and Darren break down the revelation of the NHL Seattle group planning a three-ice-sheet practice facility in the area of Northgate Mall, and they daydream about how great that will be for the hockey community once completed.
They also review NHL opening night and reminisce about the great times had at NHL Seattle’s watch party this past week (spoiler: it was Darren that won the t-shirt).
This episode even features the triumphant returns of segments like Goalie Gear Corner, in which they talk about this beauty of a mask, Weekly One-Timers, and Games On Our Radar. Plus, a hot new segment is introduced called “Get Off My Lawn,” in which the guys begrudgingly compare the pros and cons of NHL.tv versus NHL CenterIce.

Sound of Hockey Podcast Episode 4 – IT’S HAPPENING! HOCKEY IS COMING!
In the latest episode of Sound of Hockey, the guys are over the moon about the NHL’s Board of Governors Executive Committee recommending acceptance of Seattle’s expansion application. There’s no shortage of discussion on what this means to the city, the fans, and the league.
John, Andy, and Darren also chat about the latest from around the NHL, including some surprising and unfortunate injury news, interesting post-camp roster moves, and what will happen now that Joe Thornton has decided to shave his beard.
Other hard-hitting topics include Auston Matthews’ photo shoot for GQ, Carolina wearing Hartford Whalers uniforms, and an analysis of the commercials currently being played on NHL Network.

Episode 3 – The Gritty-Est Episode Yet
The third episode of Sound of Hockey is a fun one!
With the ENORMOUS NEWS of the Seattle City Council officially voting 8-0 in favor of the KeyArena project, the guys are in a particularly chipper mood for this one. Helping that mood even more is the Philadelphia Flyers’ revelation of their new mascot, Gritty, which has taken the hockey world by storm. Together, John, Andy, and Darren break down both topics in detail.
Additionally, the guys “enjoy” a little pre-season hockey talk and discuss the prospects that they’re each keeping their eyes on during this otherwise meaningless stage of the current campaign.
Finally, each host gives his own opinion of which under-the-radar NHL team is most likely to make an unexpected run this season, which quickly deteriorates into unintentional season previewing for the Atlantic and Pacific Divisions.
Episode 1 & 2 We Launched a Podcast!
We’ve experienced some pretty big hockey news over the past week or so, with some great strides being made on the arena front, Steve Yzerman stepping aside as GM in Tampa Bay, and Erik Karlsson getting traded away from the disaster that is the Ottawa Senators. But those stories pale in comparison to what I’m about to tell you…
NHLtoSeattle now has its very own podcast!
We’re calling it “Sound of Hockey,” because… well… Puget Sound. Get it?
On the show, we’ll of course discuss any updates as they pertain to an NHL franchise coming to Seattle, but we also aim to capture hockey lovers from all over the globe by expanding our horizons far beyond the reaches of the Pacific Northwest.
The hosts of the show are John Barr (creator of this little website), Andy Eide (hockey writer extraordinaire/contributor to this site), and Darren Brown (that’s me… I like blogging and podcasting… and I also contribute to the site).
We are now available on iTunes (PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SUBSCRIBE AND LEAVE US A GLOWING REVIEW), Spotify, and Soundcloud. We should be on Google Play in the next couple days as well for you Android users.
We’ve also included the first two episodes below.
We’re all very excited about our latest way of interacting with you, and we very much hope that you enjoy the show!
