Episode 104 – The Stanley Cup Final Is Nigh

The Dallas Stars are your Western Conference champions, because… well… it’s 2020, and of course they are! Meanwhile, the Islanders kept themselves alive with a double-overtime victory over the Lightning on Tuesday, and Sound of Hockey is here to give you the full rundown of everything that’s happening in the playoff bubble.

Lots of fun chatter on this week’s episode, as John, Andy, and Darren discuss some of the storylines associated with the Stars’ impressive run and do a postmortem on the recently departed Vegas Golden Knights. Get ready for a HIGH ENERGY interview with Jonny Greco, the newly hired SVP, Live Entertainment and Game Presentation for the Seattle Kraken. Jonny famously led the in-game productions for the Vegas Golden Knights in their magical inaugural season and beyond, and he also previously worked for the WWE, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, and many others. So, he has stories to share. You'll also get a look at how his wheels are starting to turn as he imagines how things will look when the Kraken take the ice in 2021.

Episode 101 - Playoff... Additions? Featuring Sports Geek Founder Sean Callanan

It's a meaty episode this week, with lots of laughs and some sports business knowledge to be had. 

On this episode, John and Darren have a discussion with the founder of Sports Geek, Sean Callanan, who becomes the first Australian to appear on Sound of Hockey. The discussion is an enlightening one, which gives you a better understanding of the landscape in an increasingly digital sports world. They also discuss how changes from COVID times will impact the sports world long-term, and much of the conversation is geared toward the Seattle Kraken.

Episode 100 - Featuring Lance Lopes, Employee #1 for the Seattle Kraken

A milestone episode for the guys calls for a very special guest! 

This week, Sound of Hockey welcomes Lance Lopes, Executive Vice President and General Counsel for the Seattle Kraken. Lance was technically the very first employee hired by the Oak View Group in Seattle to make Climate Pledge Arena a reality, and as such was one of the most influential people in bringing the 32nd NHL franchise to life. Lance shares some fantastic behind-the-scenes stories about the arena processes and the triumphant 2018 season ticket drive. This is a very interesting interview.

When you least expect it, an awesome guest slides into this week's episode, as Everett Fitzhugh - recently named the Seattle Kraken's first broadcaster - joins the guys for a very fun conversation that you won't want to miss. In case you missed Everett's story this past week, he has quickly risen through the ranks from the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones, and now will fulfill his dream of working for an NHL franchise. He has been making national headlines as the only black play-by-play announcer in professional hockey, and his passion and enthusiasm will definitely brighten your day. Give him a listen!

Also on the show this week, Darren argues that Phase 2 of the Draft Lottery was rigged (it wasn't), and John and Andy give some of their highlights from the Qualifying Round inside the NHL's bubble. This week's episode features some of the stories that came to light after the reveal of the Seattle Kraken team name, such as Ron Francis's polo shirt fiasco. 

John, Andy, and Darren also do a deep dive into the bizarre soap opera that is playing out between the Arizona Coyotes and their now former GM, John Chayka. This is a bizarre and spicy story that you will want to hear.

The guys also take a look at an article from The Athletic this week that utilizes the local knowledge of its writers to put together a mock expansion team on Seattle's behalf. This leads to a new gameshow from John, in which nobody wins.

We have a name! ...an arena name, that is.

On this week's Sound of Hockey, the guys give their reactions to the news that NHL Seattle's future home will be called Climate Pledge Arena, which gets their wheels turning about which NHL/NBA arenas have the worst corporate names.
